Just south of the Basque Country is a place that I am probably only mentioning because of the wine that it produces! Rioja is a fantastic full-bodied red-wine blend (mostly from the local variety of Tempranillo grapes) that is now protected by the EU so that it can only be produced in this region of Spain.

The region is, as you might expect from a wine region, green with undulating hills, through which the river Oja flows. Rich soil and plentiful water make this region a veritable fruit bowl which, together with excellent local cured meats, makes a for fine regional cuisine. While Rivers, lakes, nature reserves and mountains beckon enthusiasts of the great outdoors.
